Even though taking a calcium supplement can contribute to bone health, there are other factors to consider such as your current calcium intake, gender and body size, estrogen levels, exercise, smoking and heredity. So calcium supplement alone may not be enough.

Studies show that fish oil supplements may be beneficial because of the Omega 3 fatty acids in lowering risk of heart disease, however, the dosage, safety and effectiveness require more studies. Supplements are generally more concentrated products which is why to get Omega's from food is much safer. Individuals taking blood thinners or larger amounts of vitamin E should check with their physician before taking fish oil supplements as the two can be harmful together.

The safety of herbs are still under investigation and since most supplements are much more concentrated when in supplement form. Herbs can be interactive with certain medications whether over the counter or prescribed. Always ask your doctor before taking any supplement.

It is true that large amounts of ginko biloba can cause GI disturbances and those taking blood thinning medications should be especially cautious. Always check with your doctor.

Older adults have different needs than younger adults. For example, older adults tend to require more B12 than younger adults.
